What the Clevelands enjoy doing....

Having lived in Torquay since February 2009, our family have travelled around much of the area of South Devon, from Plymouth in the West to Exeter in the East and up to the far side of Dartmoor in the North.
Whatever the time of year and whatever the weather there is always somewhere to visit whether you are six or sixty. This page gives some ideas for days out that we would recommend. They are places that we have visited and which we would personally recommend.

Starting with Torquay, during the day if you enjoy history a visit to Torre Abbey and its grounds provides an interesting introduction the history of Torquay. A visit to the Medieval Village of Cockington provides the chance to see ancient medieval houses and also see craftsmen  working  in the Cockington Craft Studies. For a free day out this is an attraction well worth visiting.

On sunny days a stroll along the sea front will take you to the Harbour area where you can sit and admire the view whilst eating or drinking at one of the many cafes bars and restaurants which surround the harbour. The main nightlife in Torquay is situated round the harbour and the adjoining Torwood Street and Fleet Street. In the summer months many bars are packed with young revellers but  the Harbour also contains bars to cater for all tastes. Some have live traditional music and others provide food.

Babbacombe  is a much quieter resort than Torquay and the attractions here which are worth a visit are Bygones (especially useful if it is raining as it is all indoors)and the nearby Babbacombe Model Village.  Kents’ Cavern also gets you out of the rain and is good fun for all the family.
For a family day out Paignton Zoo provides an educational and fun day out.

We often drive up to Dartmoor, and a nice scenic route is to go via Newton Abbot to Bovey Tracey, thence to Princeton the home of the famous Dartmoor Prison.  Returning via North Bovey allows a visit to Becky Falls which contains a stunning walk down an ancient Valley. We really enjoyed our visit. The drive over the moors also allows you to get up close to the sheep and ponies which roam free over the moors.
A visit to the picturesque town of Dartmouth is a must and a trip on the ferry gives a really good view of the Dart estuary.

For the keen angler there is some really good fishing to be had at Hopes Nose, a bit of a walk to get there, but when the mackerel are running, well worth a visit.
These are our personal recommendations, and are only some of the places we have visited and which we can recommend. There are many other attractions which we have not visited and some which have visited but would not recommend. Living in Torquay we can say that whatever the weather and whatever your interests, there is always something to do in South Devon.
